On behalf of the EDRS, Dr Herman Verbist (as EDRS Executive Committee Member) welcomed the more than 40 attendants to the second event of the European Dispute Resolution Society (“EDRS”) on 18 November 2024 in Brussels on the topic “EU Trade Sanctions in Context”.

Very pleased that I could attend the 80th session of UNCITRAL Working Group II (Dispute Settlement) in Vienna in the week of 30 September-4 October 2024 where “Explanatory Notes” to the UNCITRAL Model Clauses on Specialized Express Dispute Resolution (SPEDR) were adopted and where the Working Group started to discuss the topic of the recognition and enforcement of electronic arbitral awards.

On behalf of the EDRS, Dr Herman Verbist (as EDRS Executive Committee Member) welcomed the more than 50 attendants to the first event of the European Dispute Resolution Society (“EDRS”) on 6 June 2024 in Brussels on the topic “The EU Green Deal & Fora for Climate Dispute Resolution”. He introduced the EDRS as an independent not-for-profit organization which aims to bring together academics, practitioners and policy-makers for debates on topical discussions and developments related to dispute resolution in, with and by the European Union and its Member States, in the broadest sense.

Very honoured that I could attend the 48th session of UNCITRAL Working Group III (Investor-State Dispute Settlement Reform) in New York in the week of 1-5 April 2024 where an agreement in principle was reached on the draft statute of an advisory centre on international investment dispute resolution.

I was pleased to attend the 25th Annual IBA Arbitration Day in Singapore on 22-23 February 2024 on “25 years together and now? Building the arbitration model for tomorrow” and to meet with many colleagues from around the world. Having regard to the United Nations Convention on International Settlement Agreements Resulting from Mediation, which was opened for signature in Singapore on 7 August 2019 (the “Singapore Convention on Mediation”), it was very interesting to attend also the IBA Mediation Committee meeting in Singapore on the topic “Investor state disputes : how arbitration and mediation can intertwine to provide more resonant solutions”.

Very honoured that I could attend the 79th session of UNCITRAL Working Group II (Dispute Settlement) in New York in the week of 12-16 February 2024 as delegate of FICA (Forum for International Conciliation and Arbitration) and that we were able to participate with the other delegations in the discussion on UNCITRAL clauses for technology-related dispute resolution and adjudication on which the Working Group reached consensus.

Herman Verbist taught the new “Case Study Investment Mediation” course at the Europa-Institut at Saarland University this Summer, a one-week course teaching students an alternative method for settling investor-State disputes. Students have been able to develop mediation skills on the basis of a practical case which led to virtual mediation proceedings.
